The resident Orca populations of BC and Washinton State are amongst the most intensely studied marine mammals in the world. In late 2007, the Orca whales known as the "southern resident killer whales," which span the BC and Washington border were placed on the U.S. Endangered Species list. In Canada, on the BC side of the border the Southern Resident population was designated Endangered in November 2001. This status was re-examined and confirmed in November 2008.
