A controversial and destructive new way of extracting natural gas, known as hydraulic fracturing or ‘fracking’, is threatening Canada’s fresh water and wilderness areas. Fracking is a new extraction process which oil and gas companies are using to exploit difficult to access deposits of natural gas which are trapped in hard shale rock formations.
Most Canadians are not aware that coal mining is rapidly expanding in Canada. This extremely problematic industry can and must be stopped. Coal has been known as a dirty fuel for generations. Burning coal contributes significantly to poor air quality, and can have serious health impacts in the communities next to coal mines or coal fired power plants.
Canada’s tar sands are the fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas emissions in Canada, and threaten an area of boreal forest the size of Florida. We need real action to fight pollution and the climate crisis. It’s time for our governments to phase out the tar sands.
Climate change is already having a profound impact on our environment, our economy, and our society, and the impact is growing. It’s time to end our dependence on fossil fuels and build a climate-friendly world. Together, we can grow the movement that makes better transportation, food supply and energy solutions a reality.
In North America there are over 85,000 chemicals in use, many of them found in common household products. These chemicals threaten endangered wildlife such as the Orca whale, as well as human health. The Wilderness Committee is helping to build a grassroots movement to turn back the tide of toxins flooding our communities.
The Gateway Project is a plan to expand Canada's trade with the Asia Pacific region in fundamentally un-sustainable ways. The estimated $10 billion proposal includes new and expanded port infrastructure, highways, and bridges; all to facilitate the import of more disposable goods from the Asia Pacific and export of more B.C.’s non-renewable resources. There is still an opportunity to stop this project.
