Your actions could help save the Sage Grouse

Canada's sage grouse is an iconic bird that needs your help.

Found only in the southernmost reaches of Alberta and Saskatchewan the sage grouse has undergone a dramatic decline of almost 90% between 1988 and 2006.

Today, there are just 13 male sage grouse left in Alberta and as few as 42 males remaining in Saskatchewan. The entire Canadian population is estimated at less than 200 birds where just 20 years ago there were thousands of sage grouse found in Canada.

The primary reason for the dramatic decline of the sage grouse is the ongoing loss and degradation of their habitat through rampant oil and gas development and the complete indifference of the Alberta and Saskatchewan governments.

This indifference led the Wilderness Committee with our legal partner Ecojustice and 11 other environmental organizations to file a petition today to demand that the federal government step in with an emergency order under the federal Species at Risk Act to protect Canada's sage grouse.

Your voice is very important right now.

Please take two minutes to sign this online petition to the Canadian Minister of the Environment Peter Kent and let him know how strongly you feel about saving the sage grouse.

Thanks – together we will make a difference.
