Located in the Comox Valley on the east side of Vancouver Island, the proposed Raven Coal mine would extract 44 million tonnes of coal over a 20-year period. Once this coal is burned it will add over 80 million tonnes of climate change-causing greenhouse gases into the air.
Over 2700 letters were recently submitted to the provincial and federal government environmental assessment offices during the proposed Raven Underground Coal Project’s 40-day public comment period. To the best of our understanding, this is a new record for the number of comments submitted in a single BC Environmental Assessment Office comment period. The battle, however, to stop the Raven Coal Project is far from over.
We need your help to keep up the pressure on the provincial and federal government, and Compliance Energy, to tell them that you oppose the proposed Raven Project and coal mining in BC. Please send a letter today asking Minister Peter Kent and Minister Terry Lake to deny the project’s application, and to introduce an immediate moratorium on new coal mines in BC, and to phase out all coal mining operations in BC by 2050.
