I want to thank each and every one of you who took action to stop the Raven Coal Mine over the last month and a half.
In just 40 short days over 2500 letters were written, which to the best of our understanding is a new record for the number of comments submitted in a single BC Environmental Assessment Office comment period.
Together with the over 1500 local concerned citizens who came out to public meetings, we have sent a clear message to the provincial government and Compliance Energy: no to Raven Coal, no to new coal mines in BC.
I especially want to thank the people of the Comox Valley and Port Alberni who invited us in to their communities, who opened their homes to us, who went door to door with us to talk to their neighbours and who stood with us and let Compliance CEO John Tapics know that we don’t want his dirty coal mine. Without their dedication and determination this project would not be stoppable.
Together we have accomplished a great deal in a short time but there is a great deal more still to be done. While the Raven Coal Mine proposal has been dealt a big blow it is not stopped yet. And it is not the only new coal mine seeking approval in BC. In fact, there are currently a half dozen similar proposals making their way through the approval process. We are going to need all of your continued support if we want to get to a coal free future.
At the Wilderness Committee we know that we are stronger when we stand together - we were founded on that principle. Our organization is able to take tough stands on difficult issues like coal mining and support communities that are under threat from bad developments because we are funded by thousands of everyday citizens like you.
That is why I am asking you to consider becoming a member of the Wilderness Committee. By joining us you will be helping to build a province-wide movement - one that just begins with stopping the Raven Coal Mine.
Thank you again. By taking action, you have already made a difference.
