Write Wild - Say No to Logging on Flores Island

good_waterfall_bute.jpgWe have recently learned that there is a plan to log a pristine oldgrowth valley on Flores Island in the heart of Clayoquot Sound. A logging road permit has already been issued to Iisaak Forest Resources breaking the agreement that ended the "war in woods" in 1999.

It would be such heartbreak to lose this jewel - but if we act NOW we can stop this short sighted logging plan. Your letter will make a difference.

Write to the Minister of Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations, Steve Thomson and we will copy your letter to Premier Christy Clark, the South Vancouver Island Forest District Manager, the Deputy Minister of Forests Lands and Natural Resource Operations Doug Konkin and Oppostion Forestry Critic Norm Macdonald.

Let them know how strongly you feel that the logging on Flores Island should not be permitted and that new helicopter log-drop zones permits should not be issued for Flores Island.

Some points to consider:

  • Clayoquot Sound is world-renowned for its globally rare expanse of ancient temperate rainforest.
  • It is also known as a place where the Central Region Chiefs of the Nuu-chah-nulth First Nations -- Hesquiaht, Ahousaht, Tla-o-qui-aht, Ucluelet and Toquaht -- have worked with environmental groups to protect and conserve the ancient forests within First Nations' traditional territories.
  • However, the intact valleys of Clayoquot Sound, have still not been protected in provincial law and are once again in danger of being logged by the logging company Iisaak Forest Resources, who are currently planning logging in an intact area of pristine ancient forests on Flores Island.
  • Therefore, please do not permit new helicopter log-drop zones off Flores Island and do not issue any more road permits or cut permits for any of Clayoquot Sound's intact areas. I urge you to support conservation solutions currently being pursued by environmental organizations and local First Nations.
