GREENWASH TECK ACTION!
Join 350Vancouver and Climate Convergence for an action outside of the Teck office to draw direct attention to the proposed massive Teck Frontier Mine tar sands project.
This project:
- has "‘irreversible’ impacts on the environment and ‘significant’ adverse effects on Indigenous peoples, but [the joint review panel] recommended it be approved in the ‘public interest’ anyway"
- will produce 260,000 barrels of bitumen each day at its peak, making it one of the largest oilsands mines — if not the largest — to ever be built in Alberta.
- would take up about half of the additional volume created by the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion
- will emit four megatonnes [of CO2] per year, equal to three per cent of all of the emissions allowed in Canada in 2050.
- will cover 24,000-hectares (roughly double the size of the City of Vancouver)
- tar sands "growth is going to make it virtually impossible to meet our 2030 Paris climate targets"
- is situated where "wetlands cover nearly 45 per cent of the area studied, amounting to 14,000 hectares".
The federal Cabinet is preparing to approve this project.
Teck's efforts to present themselves as a leader in sustainability and environmental stewardship are corporate greenwash of the worst kind in the face of the reality of the kind of work they do and are proposing with the Teck Frontier Mine.
Join us early Friday morning at a creative action drawing attention to the Frontier Mine and Teck's Greenwashing efforts!
