The province of BC has accepted the application to reopen Imperial Metals mine, giving one month, until May 2, for public comment.  The Secwepemc Women Warriors Society, who have been monitoring the impacts at disaster site and who called the, National Day of Action, argues that by “Allowing this corporation to reopen the Mount Polley mine is a violation of sovereignty and opens the territory up to further damage.  Imperial Metals has no consent from the Secwepemc.”

Imperial Metals dumped 25 million cubic meters of toxic mining waste into the unceded Territory of the Secwepemc Peoples. The spill has disrupted the Secwepemc Peoples way of life. The toxics tailings have reached the Fraser watershed and the 2nd largest salmon spawning grounds in the world.

“What happens here at Mount Polley and how government and industry deal with this disaster is going to set a precedent on how they deal with other disasters and spills in the future, whether from mining or pipelines.” argues Kanahus Manuel.

The public, Indigneous Nations, environmental organizations and activists have joined together today to stop the provincial permits to reopen the mine.  #imperialnomore
