Walk the Kinder Morgan Pipeline

This walk is hosted by Genevieve Robertson and Jay White

You are warmly invited to take part in the second Walk the Line project, by joining us as we follow the most recently-proposed Kinder Morgan pipeline route, on Wednesday, May 20, 2015. Feel free to pass this on to others who might be interested.

On the first organized Walk The Line in December 2014, a group of concerned local residents, educators and artists traversed a similar route. Sustained interest in the project, and a perceived need to access and experience areas that would be affected by pipeline expansion, has encouraged us to organize a second walk.

Starting at 3:00 PM on May 20, we will walk from the north bank of the Fraser River just east of the Port Mann Bridge, along the Brunette River, to Production Way Skytrain Station. The route passes through Kwikwetlem, Kwantlen and Tsleil-Waututh Territories, and through the municipalities of New Westminster (Qayqayt), Coquitlam and Burnaby.

This is a two-and-a-half hour walk, with some slightly challenging sections, including a small train bridge. We intend on taking a relaxed pace to allow for contemplation, observation, note-taking, material-gathering, and discussion. Through our bodily presence, the intention is to internalize the spaces that the pipeline will intersect and affect; to engage in the ecological implications of the pipeline expansion; and to collectively consider the complicated nature of this contested landscape.

After the walk there will be a Town Hall Meeting about tank farm safety, hosted by Burnaby Residents Opposing Kinder-Morgan Expansion. This will be held at 7:00 pm at Forest Grove Elementary school, a site that is particularly vulnerable  to tank farm fire, spillage, and toxic smoke / gas effects in the event of  an earthquake. The school is a 45 minute walk from the Production Way Skytrain Station. We welcome you to join this conversation.

While we aim to bring attention and awareness to the sites and the issues along the proposed route, we would like to acknowledge the ongoing work of many local individuals and organizations who are continually invested in defending the integrity of the land that supports them. This includes members of BROKE (Burnaby Residents Opposed to Kinder Morgan Expansion) and local indigenous nations, including the Tsleil-Waututh Nation.

If you are interested in participating, please email walkthepipeline@gmail.com

We will follow up with more detailed information that will outline transportation and transit access, etc.

Thank you,
Genevieve and Jay
