Wilderness Witness Tour: Paddle the Lower Bird River

In recognition of World Rivers Day, September 28, the Wilderness Committee will lead groups of paddlers on a 12-kilometre paddle along the beautiful lower Bird River, through the area we’ve proposed for protection. We’ll relate stories of the region, the wildlife, the threats and the opportunities.

A hot lunch will be prepared for us at one of the portages. The day will end with a walk along the waterfalls and rapids that protect the lower Bird from power boat access.

The initial paddle trip was scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 28, but because of the overwhelming response from eager paddlers, we have added an additional paddle tour on Saturday, Sept. 27.

The details:

  • Saturday, Sept. 27 or Sunday, Sept. 28 – 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m
  • 12 km paddle downstream in easy current, with two portages (150 m and 300 m)
  • Carpooling available from Winnipeg and from Trapper’s Esso near Lac du Bonnet
  • Bring a canoe or kayak, or we can organize a rental
  • Bring a paddling partner, or we can pair you with someone
  • Kids are welcome

Trip cost (includes lunch and transportation): $10

The deadline for registration is Tuesday, September 23rd.
