Act Now to Stop Waste Incineration

Monday, July 12, 2010

Wed. July 14th Deadline Reminder

We have a real opportunity to stop Metro Vancouver's proposal to build a new incinerator to burn garbage. In the past couple weeks we have seen some big steps in the right direction.

A number of municipalities have come out in opposition to the plan including the City of Vancouver, Coquitlam, Port Moody and the District of North Vancouver along with the Fraser Valley Regional District.

The media have taken an interest in highlighting this issue. You can see some of the stories that have been written here on our website. Recently the Vancouver and District Labour Council has joined the growing number of community groups that have come out against the plan.

However, even with all of this opposition there are still those within Metro Vancouver pushing for this plan to go forward and some still remain undecided. With one more big push we can stop this plan once and for all.

This is where you come in. The time has come to write to Metro Vancouver and to get everyone you know to do the same. Letters really do make a difference. Many councilors who have come out against incineration told us that letters had an impact on their decision. It’s easy. All you need to do is use the letter writing tool on our website.

You can also just send an email to waste.incinerators@writewild.net Either way your message will go to all the members of Metro Vancouver's regional board.

The deadline for submissions to the public consultation is this Wednesday July 14th. Please write your message to Metro today and forward this call for support to your friends.

For more information about the proposed plan and the sensible alternatives, visit the website for the Zero Waste BC Network we have been working with on this campaign Working together we can shift focus to expanding composting, recycling, re-use, repair and product take-back programs. This is the key to stopping waste incineration and shrinking our landfills until they close. It is also critical to protecting our wild places from logging and mining.
