Anti-pipeline groups drop off 1,000 letters at Selinger's office

Manitoba's Wilderness Committee and the Manitoba Energy Justice Coalition dropped off more than 1,000 letters to Premier Greg Selinger's office on Thursday, asking him to deny construction permits for a controversial pipeline.

TransCanada's proposed Energy East pipeline would see a pipeline cross the province towards the east coast. Eric Reder, local campaign director for the Wilderness Committee, said the pipeline would require 176 megawatts of hydroelectricity in Manitoba alone and involve building an extensive new network of transmission lines just for the project. While Ottawa can approve or deny the project, provinces can halt the project by refusing to issue building permits for it.

"We know Manitobans don't want the risk, the infrastructure burden, or the climate impacts of this fossil fuel folly," said Reder, in a press release.
