BC’s badgers love Elise Verdin
Elise Verdin is an 11 year old girl who loves soccer, ice cream cake and American badgers.
American badgers live in British Columbia and, at last count, only 300 remain, because of loss of habitat, persecution and road fatalities.
BC’s badgers are just one of 1,900 species at risk in a province with no endangered species law.
Elise decided to do something about that.
So after school she knocked on her neighbours’ doors, went to her local dog park and talked to people about the plight of BC's endangered species.
At first it was hard, and Elise wasn’t sure if anyone cared and it was difficult to approach people she didn’t know at the park. However, she persevered and over the course of five long months she gathered over 800 names on her petition calling for an endangered species law.
The Wilderness Committee heard about Elise’s big heart and hard work and last week presented her with a plaque on behalf of all BC’s species at risk.
You can see her story on Global TV here:
If you want to help protect endangered species in BC, you too can sign the petition online: protectbiodiversity.ca And take a few moments and pass this information onto your friends.
Together we can make sure badgers, bobolinks and bluebirds receive the protection they need – now and into the future.
