Better public transit is within our grasp
April 24, 2015
I’m sure by now you have heard a lot about the transit referendum here in the Lower Mainland. This is a crucial opportunity for us to tell decision-makers that we want, and need – better public transit!
In order to move away from an oil and fuel-based economy, we need an alternative. Getting people off the highways and reducing our collective carbon footprint means prioritizing efficient and accessible public transit.
We at the Wilderness Committee are supporting a YES vote in the referendum, and we’re hoping you do the same.
The proposal put forward by Metro Vancouver would increase the amount of buses, trains, HandyDART and SeaBus trips, while improving the conditions of existing roads, walkways and bike routes. Voting YES is one of the most powerful things you can do right now to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our region.
Worried about the cost? The proposal would cost the average household about as much as a cup of coffee per week, and would raise $250 million annually. That’s the power of people working together to towards a more liveable region.
What’s more, better transit has been linked to better public health and safety because it lowers air pollution, encourages walking and cycling, and keeps fewer cars on the road (which means fewer collisions). Efficient public transit benefits all members of society – those who use it and even those who don’t.

Your ballot has already been delivered to you – if you haven’t already, it’s time to dig it out of your pile of junk mail, vote YES and send it in! All ballots must be received by May 29, 2015.
This is our chance to say YES to a healthier and more sustainable future. Let’s make it happen!
