THE PROVINCE

What better way to celebrate Earth Week than to visit the Lungs of the Lower Mainland?

The Burns Bog Conservation Society is hosting its annual pilgrimage to the bog on Sunday, a free cross-cultural event aimed at getting the general public to see and understand the significance of the bog.

“It’s our way of opening the celebrations of Earth Week,” said Burns Bog Conservation Society president Eliza Olson.

A nature-themed festival begins at 1 p.m. at the Delta Nature Reserve (10388 Nordel Court) and will include live music, educational and entertainment booths by community groups and free refreshments from sponsor Cobbs Bread.

Guest speakers include former Vancouver city councillor Fred Bass, former Delta North MLA Guy Gentner, naturalist and author Anne Murray, environmental activist Ben West, the Wilderness Committee’s Joe Foy, Aboriginal Front Door Society founder Aline LaFlamme, Global Hindu Foundation of Canada president Acharya Dwivedi and Olson.

“It’s a pilgrimage with a difference,” said Olson.

The walk begins at 2 p.m. and the pace will slow. The event is wheelchair and stroller accessible.

If you want to keep the celebration going, consider a visit to Surrey’s Party for the Planet on April 27. The free family event will take place at Central City Plaza from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and feature performances from Lights and Hey Ocean!
