Fighting to Save the Experimental Lakes Area

Tuesday, June 19, 2012

On Saturday June 16, 2012, the Wilderness Committee joined 70 other signatories listed on a full-page ad in the Globe and Mail and Winnipeg Free Press, expressing our support for the world-renowned Experimental Lakes Area (ELA).

The ELA is a one-of-a-kind outdoor facility dedicated to freshwater research, located in northwestern Ontario just east of the Manitoba border. It has been internationally recognized as a vital resource for information and policy-driving science about freshwater ecosystems.

But in May 2012, the Canadian government announced the closure of the facility — just when the planet needs it most.

Leaders in the environmental and scientific community are speaking out against the decision, and trying to spread the word about the ELA's important and groundbreaking work. Along with the Wilderness Committee, other signatories on the ad include the Canadian Wildlife Federation, the Canadian Rivers Institute, Phil Fontaine, former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations and former Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin.
