First Section of South Fraser Witness Trail Completed

Tuesday, December 01, 2009
After getting drenched on our last trail expedition, it was a welcome relief to have good weather on Sunday. Eight of us showed up to complete the first section of trail below Surrey’s Fraser Heights neighbourhood. Most of us were from Surrey and elswhere in the lower mainland, but our crew included Annelies from Amsterdam and Ryo from Japan.

The trail passes two beaver dams as it winds its way through a beautiful stretch of second growth forest. Huge old cedar stumps show that the forest was originally logged in the 1880-90s, well before the advent of the chain saw, when loggers stood on planks notched into the tree trunk to cut down the giants using a whip saw and axe. You can still see the plank notch on the old stumps to this day.

Sitting by the second beaver dam, we talked about how crazy it is that the provincial and federal governments want to spend over a billion dollars to build a freeway through this crucial salmon habitat. And how building freeways in the face of the climate crisis amounts to a climate crime.

If you want to take action to protect salmon habitat and stop global warming, while getting some healthy exercise, contact us about volunteering on a trail crew. We will also have a trail map available soon, so you can hike the trail on your own.
