CANADA's largest environmental citizen group is appealing a government decision to allow an all-weather logging road to be built in Grass River Provincial Park.
The Wilderness Committee filed a formal appeal of the environmental licence issued to Tolko Industries last month. Tolko says it needs the 17-kilometre logging road, running off Highway 39, because it's the shortest route to a 20-year supply of timber north of the park.
Environmentalists are upset the Doer government passed legislation in June banning logging in all but one of Manitoba's 81 provincial parks, yet weeks later gave Tolko the green light for the road.
The committee also says officials with the Parks Branch, Conservation and Water Stewardship oppose this road because of its potential impact on wildlife, particularly caribou.
