Canada’s Wilderness Committee is calling for a nationwide ban on a pesticide that’s killing off bees at an alarming rate.
The pesticide called neonicotinoid is responsible for the death of hundreds of millions of honeybees.
Policy Director at the Wilderness Committee Gwen Barlee says bees influence one in every three bites of food we eat.
“And so if we value bees…if we value wild pollinators like bumblebees, what we’ll need to do is ban neonicotinoid because they are so incredibly toxic to bees and wild pollinators.”
The European Union has banned the pesticide and Ontario has reduced the use of neonicotinoid by 80%.
The Vancouver Park Board says they will no longer buy plants treated with neonicotinoid to help protect honey bees.
