Langley Advance

Fraser Valley residents can have their say on an expanded oil pipeline at a local forum.

A group opposed to expanding the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain pipeline through the Fraser Valley is hosting a public meeting on Wednesday in Abbotsford.

The pipeline runs through northern Langley, and is to be twinned in the near future.

Groups opposed to the plan, including the Wilderness Committee, Tanker Free BC and the PIPE UP Network, are hosting the town hall in an attempt to gather more support.

The event will be held at the University of the Fraser Valley campus at 33844 King Road in Abbotsford starting at 7 p.m., in the UFV auditorium.

The pipeline has been there since 1953.

Kinder Morgan President Ian Anderson said the company intends to increase the volume of oil it transports from its current 330,000 barrels per day to 850,000 bpd.

The environmental alliance opposing the expansion says it will involve digging up lands, damming rivers and disturbing community infrastructure, as well as increasing the risk of a future spill.
