Database to go online by January 2012, provide location of fracking operations

The province is promising an online database of fracking operations will be up and available to the public by the beginning of next year.

Premier Christy Clark announced the database on Thursday at the Oil and Gas Conference in Fort Nelson. She says the database will give detailed information on the location and additives used in these natural gas operations.

Clark says the database will foster more transparency in the industry. She says the plan is for operators to voluntarily disclose details on additives to the Ministry of Energy by the end of this year.

The BC Wilderness Committee calls the disclosure of additives a good first step, but say the plan does not go far enough. The organization calls fracking dangerous to public health, and additives in fracking operations contaminate groundwater sources.
