Raven's Creek: Mixed bag

Saturday, August 28, 2010

Harvest time for a garden planted in late June rather than the more desirable late May was bound to produce a mixed bag. Sure, maybe the potatoes and beets didn't turn out but by the end of August this mixed bag was overflowing with cucumbers, tomatoes, lettuce, peas, beans, even a few watermelons.

Thanks to the selfless hours given by our dedicated volunteers like Brock and Rachael and Charles, our WOOFER from France, who tirelessly worked at the careful pruning, mulching and staking of the garden. The garden also thrived due to the buckets of water that Robert Raven carried by hand to water the garden during crucial times, we had lots of food to share.

On my visit to Black Island I was able to give away hundreds of cucumbers and huge heads of lettuce and receive in return, dozen's of "Meegwetchs". I also got to see the look on Robyn's (a worker at the local clinic) face when I told her I had some tomatoes for her to give away and pulled up with three huge rubber storage containers, full to the brim with tomatoes, waiting to ripen on many window sills. Despite expecting more to the tune of three ice-cream containers, she gladly helped us distribute these precious fruits.
