Standing our ground against Taseko Mines
January 15, 2015
Back in 2012, the Wilderness Committee was surprised when Taseko Mines Ltd. served us notice that they were taking us to court for defamation. The company didn’t like some of the statements we made in an online action alert encouraging people to provide comments on its proposed New Prosperity mine, located near Fish Lake in Tsilhqot’in Nation Territory.
Like many British Columbians, environmental groups and local First Nations, we opposed this mine project because of the serious negative impacts it would have on fish, wildlife and on the lives of the Tsilhqot’in people. The lawsuit didn’t stop us from speaking out about our concerns.
Just last year, the federal government rejected Taseko’s risky mining plans – and Fish Lake was saved! But unfortunately, our struggles with the mining company continue.
The Wilderness Committee is going to court starting Monday, January 19th to defend against the defamation claim by Taseko Mines.
It’s times like these that remind us that Canadians’ right to speak out is precious – even more precious than gold. Sometimes we are called upon to stand up and defend that right.
That’s why we are asking you to consider helping out in one of the following ways…
Donate – The Wilderness Committee is facing increased expenses due to rising administration costs and the many hours of staff time involved in defending ourselves against Taseko’s lawsuit, to the tune of nearly $15,000. If you can help ease this additional financial burden and support our fight for the right to speak out, please donate today!
Help us spread the word – Please share this message with your friends and family. The more voices speaking up for wilderness and democracy, the better!
Thanks again for your support.
For the wild,
Joe Foy | National Campaign Director
