Tell China we don't want the Gateway to Global Warming

Monday, February 06, 2012

Prime Minister Harper is in China all week, and he has a number of top oil executives with him on the delegation.

Here in Vancouver, this Wednesday at 12 Noon, we will bring our message to the outside walls of the Consulate General of The People's Republic of China (3380 Granville Street).

We want the people of China to know that we, a majority of people in British Columbia, do not want to have big multinational companies ship oil through our province. The majority of people on the west coast of Canada want to make sure our coastal waters will not be converted into the tar sands shipping port. We will ensure that Stephen Harper is not allowed to misrepresent our perspective.

The proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, as well as the looming proposal to more than double the Kinder Morgan TMX pipeline and the Keystone XL pipeline, would all be big steps in the wrong direction for the biosphere of our planet. In this age of climate change caused by fossil fuel addiction, it isn't in anyone's best interest to build and expand these pipelines that people are calling the "Gateway to Global Warming".

Meet us at the corner of Granville and 16th at 11:45am and join us for this action outside the Chinese consulate at 12 noon on Wednesday.

We encourage you to bring your cameras to get pictures of the signs and to get video of what people have to say. Let's make sure that our neighbours across the Pacific know that tar sands pipelines aren't a good investment in our collective future. Let's tell them we want to build a relationship that works towards an ethical and sustainable future.

Come to our sign making party on Tuesday night at 6:30pm at the Wilderness Committee at 341 Water Street - 4th floor. We will have yummy pizza, good music and all the suplies you need to make signs and banners and buttons and everything else you need to make sure that our voice is heard across the ocean. There will be a briefing presentation on the campaign to ban oil exports off the coast of BC. Even if you can't make it on Wednesday, we can still use your sign or you can even make one at home and post a photo of it on our facebook event page.

Together, with partners around the world fighting for climate justice, we can defeat the big oil companies and make governments work to protect our interests instead of theirs. Please join us in this fight for democracy and sustainability.

Thanks so much,
