Tours of besieged Nanoose Bay forest start this weekend

Weekly guided tours of the controversial District Lot 33 (DL33) will start up again this weekend led by the local Wilderness Committee.
DL33 is a parcel of Crown land in Nanoose Bay containing Coastal Douglas Fir forest and is slated for logging. The Nanoose First Nation have handed in their final cut permit application and are awaiting approval.
Called one of the most biologically diverse and most threatened forest wetlands in the country, Annette Tanner, Wilderness Committee Mid Island co-ordinator, said she hasn’t been surprised by all the interest about the property from locals.
“The wildlife photo display of the Nanoose Bay Forest, referred to as DL 33, sparked quite a bit of interest at our September B.C. Rivers Day event,” she said. “People were amazed at the photos of the local wildlife and requested tours to the forest, so we decided we would resume our weekly guided tours.”
The tours will resume Sat., Oct. 9. Residents are asked to meet at the Nanoose Petrocan station at 11 a.m. For details, contact Annette Tanner at 250-752-6585 or cell 250-240-7470.
