VANCOUVER – As joint review panel hearings begin in Vancouver this week regarding the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline, the Wilderness Committee will be joining numerous groups and individuals—including First Nations, environmental groups and local residents—in expressing opposition to the controversial project.

The Wilderness Committee will be participating in the hearings on Thursday, January 17th with an oral statement, as well as joining allies starting at 3:00 p.m. today to rally against the pipeline on the streets of Vancouver.

“A project that endangers BC’s land and precious freshwater resources, exposes our coastline to the risk of a devastating oil tanker spill, and facilitates the expansion of the tar sands simply must not go ahead,” said Wilderness Committee Policy Director Gwen Barlee.

“British Columbians from far and wide have united in opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline, and this week we’re standing up once again to say ‘No!’ to Enbridge,” Barlee said.

Community hearings before the joint review panel will be held in Vancouver from January 14 to 18, 2013 at the Sheraton Wall Centre. As was the case in Victoria last week, members of the public have been blocked from attending this week’s hearings—instead they are forced to watch live broadcasts of the “public” process at a separate viewing venue.
