Canada's oldest tree
Sunday, December 15, 1991
This is 1991 Wilderness Committee education report that describes the discovery of the stump of a recently logged old growth yellow cedar tree in the Caren Range on the Sunshine Coast. A ring count of the stump revealed that this tree was over 1,700 years old, making it the oldest known tree in Canada. This discovery helped move forward the campaign to save the remaining ancient forests of the Caren Range.
In 1996 the campaign met with some success when the BC government designated about 3,000 hectares of the Caren Range as the Spipiyus Provincial Park. See our History and Achievements page.
