Carmanah - Protect this ancient forest forever
Thursday, December 15, 1988
This is a 1988 Wilderness Committee education report that describes the ongoing campaign to protect the Carmanah Valley from being logged by MacMillan Bloedel. In this report MacMillan Bloedel had just lost its court bid to stop the Wilderness Committee from building a hiking trail to the groves of big trees. The logging company then offered to protect a small portion of the valley - while the Wilderness Committee demanded that the entire valley be protected. Member of Parliament Bob Wenman was calling for the entire valley to be protected as part of the Pacific Rim National Park.
The lower Carmanah Valley was protected in 1990 within the Carmanah Pacific Provincial Park - then in 1994 the entire valley was protected in an enlarged park now named the Carmanah Walbran Provincial Park. See our History and Achievements page.
